If I was able to make this change, I'd have my apron and be baking cake right now. There's no doubt about it. Instead of hoping for the electives we want, it would be great if we could choose them. With so few electives throughout the year, I know everyone wants to make the most of the time they spend in these periods. A majority of our school day is spent in academic and required classes. But I have't had any of these. It really stinks! In our schedule, there are not a lot of opportunities to take electives. There's Art, Home Economics, Italian and Music, to name a few. There are many awesome electives in my school, but we can't choose which ones we have. ![]() Pushing it back and giving students more sleep would help them be more focused in class. My point is, school starts way too early. Sluggish and cranky, their attention span isn't going to be the greatest. So when they have to wake up at 6 o'clock, they've barely had enough sleep. We're incredibly tired! It's cold and almost pitch black on our way to school too, so that makes it even worse. When everyone finally drags themselves into their homeroom, they just want to sleep on their desks. Seriously people, 7:30 a.m.? With sports, homework and video games (can't leave that out!), kids are staying up late every night. My school is great, but I don't want to be there at 7:30 in the morning. So if you ask me, "What changes would you make as principal?," without hesitation, I would have school start later, and let the students choose their own electives. Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against my classes this marking period, but if I'd been given the choice, i'd be sewing aprons right now in Home Economics. But, you know what stinks even more? The fact that my electives are chosen for me. My school day starts at 7:30 a.m. and that really stinks. ![]()
